Appeal: A dream is sparked

Orphan Appeal 2011: As 16-year-old Zubair boarded the plane at Heathrow airport in London, he was excited aswell as unsure of what to expect as he was heading out of Europe for the first time. He, with 18 other boys in his group were on a tour of India, a poverty-stricken country, sent as a delegation from London being part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association UK.

This trip to India “sparked a dream” in the young boy which would change his perception of the world and humanity forever. As he was driven from city to village across the vast nation, he saw the stark contrast in wealth, health and morality like he had never seen before. He couldn’t understand how people in luxurious cities could live so close to villages plagued by poverty and diseases and not help.

As a kid he felt the pain of being separated from his mother for the 2 week journey and then saw Orphans who were separated from their families for years with no hope of being re-united. This insight into the hidden lives of children living in the slums of India opened his eyes to the world outside the comfort and security of London. With the feeling of anxiety looking deep into the eyes of a 16-year-old Indian boy who looked just like him but had nothing, he pledged to himself that he would help them in whatever way he could, with whatever resources he had.

Now he is 20-years-old and is in a position where he can move the world to see what he saw and feel what he felt. He has set up a blog, The Ahmadiyya Post, which deals with world peace and has now, 4 years after that life-changing trip, created a fund for those living as Orphans who deserve more than they have been given.

“The feeling of pain in the eyes of Orphans cannot be translated into words from me to you; however I can try and hope you are empathetic enough to understand their situation.”
