Opinion: There is no substitute for hard work

In this age of social media and technology the world has become obsessed with the concept of overnight successes such as celebrities or business people who feed the public with notions that you can get that big break - with a tiny bit of effort - which will give you worldwide fame and fortune.


This has killed the drive to work hard and learn new skills in the youth of today.

The founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association said:

"A nation cannot be reformed without the reformation of its youth"

Therefore, with the new 'instant' culture that we live in - instant messaging, instant diets, instant money, instant gratification - nobody takes the time to pick life goals, work towards them and attain true success the old-fashioned way.

"and how good is the reward of those who work!"[Holy Qur'an, 3:137]

Hard work and intense effort is essential in all walks of life, everyone needs to have that discipline in the 'survival of the fittest' world that we are a part of.

Nowadays to stay ahead of the game you need to be picking up new skills everyday and putting in hours of work in whatever good venture you are pursuing.

"And whoso performs a good work with willing obedience, it is better for him." [Holy Qur'an, 2:185]

Social networking apps like twitter, Facebook, instagram and tumblr enable kids to live vicariously through their favourite celebrities. They constantly check their updates without realising that they are doing nothing in the own lives, it becomes a vicious cycle of wishing you had a wonderful life and doing nothing to work towards it yourself.

Therefore, looking introspectively we all need to set life goals and work hard every day to achieve them however big or small they may be. This will ensure a bright future for ourselves.

"I will allow not the work of any worker from among you, whether male or female, to be lost." [Holy Qur'an, 3:196]
